19 November 2020: Cinétévé Experience, RTVE, Nivea, and Bikespector, as well as some of Europe’s biggest online publishers including The Economist, Conde Nast International, Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed UK, Evening Standard and Dagbladet are named winners of the 10th Annual Lovie Awards, the most prestigious pan-European honour for online excellence. The Lovie Awards also named Dept as Lovie Agency of the Year, based on the advertising agency that performed the best across all categories.

All winners will be celebrated along with Lovie Award Special Achievement honourees, including Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, aka Gorillaz, and Jameela Jamil, actor, host and creator of the iWeigh movement and podcast, in the first-ever virtual Lovie Awards celebration, Lovies X Everywhere, launching today at 14:00 GMT at lovieseverywhere.com, presented by Google. All winners are also showcased at www.lovieawards.com

Lovie Award Winners are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS). Members include musician Imogen Heap, actor and writer Stephen Fry, “Father of Wi-Fi” Vic Hayes, Vice President and Chief AI Scientist, Facebook Yann LeCun, Vice President, LEGO Anna Rafferty, Actor & Producer Ashley Walters, Host of The Happy Place Podcast Fearne Cotton, Creator, Have You Heard George’s Podcast? George The Poet (George Mpanga), Executive Creative Director, Wieden + Kennedy London Iain Tait, Strategy Director, AKQA Miriam Plon Sauer, and Co-Founder, TomTom and Codam College Corinne Vigreux, among others. The People’s Lovie Award winners are determined by the public.

IADAS also announced Special Achievement winners for 2020, honouring leaders in Europe who use the internet in exceptional ways, especially during the global Covid-19 pandemic. They are:

  • Gorillaz, Lovie Lifetime Achievement, for their outstanding work combining music and digital technology for more than a decade, from the early days to their Spotify release of MAYDEUP FEST giving fans across the Internet a festival experience, to their upcoming livestream concert for their new album, Song Machine. Their award will be presented by Imogen Heap.

  • Jameela Jamil, Lovie Special Achievement, for using her massive online influence to advocate for body positivity, inclusivity and self-love, and against shame, notably by founding the inspiring Instagram and online community, and podcast, iWeigh. Her award will be presented by gender non-conforming writer and performance artist, Alok Vaid-Menon.

They join previous Special Achievement winners such as Jamie Oliver, Björk, Stephen Fry, Annie Lennox, George the Poet, Ashley Walters, Eben Upton, Michael Dapaah (Big Shaq), Yann LeCun, Evanna Lynch, Prof. Heinz Gerhäuser, Sophie Wilson, JR, and The European Space Agency, among others.

“This year’s winners exemplify the creativity, resiliency and the convergence of cultures that represents the Lovies, and Europe as a whole,” commented Nicolas Roope, IADAS Jury Chairman of The Lovie Awards. “Our aim goes beyond awarding outstanding work. It also provides an opportunity to learn from all projects across the European digital spectrum that positively impact people both online and off. Which is particularly inspiring as we continue to live through the global pandemic, which has forced us to reinvent and rethink everything from how we work to how we educate, and how we advocate for one another.”

“I continue to be inspired by how creativity has blossomed during this unusual year–how asking a question can ignite the imagination and lead to new possibilities. At Google, we see people asking new questions daily. Actually, 15% of searches every single day are new. It’s this curiosity that fuels amazing creativity around the world, and we’re proud to be celebrating it with The Lovie Awards,” commented Nishma Robb, Director of Brand and Reputation Marketing, Google UK.

In its sixth consecutive year, The Lovie Agency of the Year Award is bestowed upon the agency that performs best across all award categories. With 8 awards in total—3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze awards—as determined by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS), 8 People’s Lovie Awards voted on by the online public, as well as 6 Official Shortlist nods, Dept (Amsterdam) performed the best across all Lovie categories this year and wins the 2020 Lovie Agency of the Year distinction.
