SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT HONOUREES

Russell Brand, Stormzy, Global Citizen, dodie, Lewis Hamilton, Ashnikko, Tom Grennan, Luminary, BBC Earth, WeTransfer, Leo Messi x adidas, Channel4 and more win European Internet’s highest honour

named Special Achievement Honourees

17 November 2021: Eurovision 2021, Zendesk, IKEA, and Yousician, as well as some of Europe’s biggest online publishers including The Financial Times, Vogue Spain, Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed, Comedy Central UK and The Danish Broadcasting Corporation are named winners of the 11th Annual Lovie Awards, the most prestigious pan-European honour for online excellence. The Lovie Awards also named Media.Monks B.V. as Lovie Agency of the Year, based on the advertising agency that performed the best across all categories. 

All winners will be celebrated along with Lovie Award Special Achievement honourees, including ABBA, activist, model and Founder of Gurls Talk Adwoa Aboah, writer and comedian Mawaan Rizwan (Netflix’s Sex Education), and Eliot Higgins, Founder of Bellingcat, in a virtual Lovie Awards celebration, Reshape Possible, launching today at 14:00 GMT at watch.lovieawards.com, The show will be hosted by Deborah Frances-White, the comedian, writer and podcaster best known as The Guilty Feminist. All winners are also showcased at www.lovieawards.com.

Lovie Award Winners are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS). Members include musician Imogen Heap, actor and writer Stephen Fry, “Father of Wi-Fi” Vic Hayes, Vice President and Chief AI Scientist, Facebook Yann LeCun, VP, LEGO Anna Rafferty, Actor & Producer Ashley Walters, Host of The Happy Place Podcast Fearne Cotton, Creator, Have You Heard George’s Podcast? George The Poet (George Mpanga), Strategy Director, AKQA Miriam Plon Sauer, and Co-Founder, TomTom and Codam College Corinne Vigreux, among others. The People’s Lovie Award winners are determined by the public. 

IADAS also announced Special Achievement winners for 2021, honouring leaders in Europe who use the internet in exceptional ways, especially throughout the global Covid-19 pandemic. They are: 

  • ABBA, Lovie Lifetime Achievement, for their outstanding work in combining art and digital technology to make one of the biggest comebacks in music history. From joining TikTok to introducing their ABBAtars for their upcoming album and global tour, ABBA Voyage, the band demonstrates what it means, in real time, to be at the bleeding edge of art and technology in our connected world. Their award will be presented by Richard Curtis.
  • Adwoa Aboah, Lovie Special Achievement, for her work as Founder of GurlsTalk, a multimedia organisation providing podcasts, forums, conferences and more as safe online spaces for young women to discuss mental health, sexuality and identity.
  • Mawaan Rizwaan, Lovie Special Achievement, for consistently creating original, groundbreaking work that is intrinsically tied to the Internet and digital culture, most especially as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. His award will be presented by comedian Thanyia Moore.
  • Eliot Higgins, Lovie Special Achievement, for his work as the Founder of Bellingcat, and his mission to harness the immense power of the internet to bring crimes and atrocities of global dictators and leaders under public scrutiny through collective, online citizen journalism. 

They join previous Special Achievement winners such as Jameela Jamil, Gorillaz, Jamie Oliver, Björk, Stephen Fry, Annie Lennox, George the Poet, Ashley Walters, Eben Upton, Michael Dapaah (Big Shaq), Evanna Lynch, Prof. Heinz Gerhäuser, Sophie Wilson, JR, and The European Space Agency, among others.

“This year’s winners exemplify the creativity, resiliency and the convergence of cultures that represents the Lovies, and Europe as a whole,” commented Nicolas Roope, IADAS Jury Chairman of The Lovie Awards. “Our aim goes beyond awarding outstanding work. It also provides an opportunity to learn from all projects across the European digital spectrum that positively impact people both online and off. Which is particularly inspiring as we continue to live through the global pandemic, which has forced everyone to reinvent and rethink nearly everything, from how we work to how we educate, and how we advocate for one another.” 

In its’ seventh consecutive year, The Lovie Agency of the Year Award goes to Media.Monks B.V., the agency that performs best across all award categories. With 6 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze, 8 People’s Lovie Awards and 7 works Shortlisted, including “The Uncensored Library,” “The Queen and The Crown,” “Omroep Zwart” plus work for Eurovision 2021, Media.Monks earned more Lovie Awards and Shortlist nods across all categories than any other agency this year.
