16 November 2018: The 8th Annual Lovie Awards took place at BFI Southbank in London, honouring the best of the European Internet. Winners represent the best creators, publishers, personalities, brands and agencies using the internet to inspire creativity and change in Europe.

Acclaimed BBC comedian Mark Watson hosted the awards celebration at BFI Southbank in London commenting on the internet and political climate and the overlap between, enforcing the night’s winners sharing their 7 Words of Lovie acceptance speeches.

To kick off the show, Michael Dapaah (a.k.a. Big Shaq) accepted the Lovie Award for Outstanding Comedic Performance, presented by his filmmaker and creative director collaborator Marv Brown. Awarded for using digital media as his go-to platform for experimentation and creation, including with his #SWIL web series and his viral “Man’s Not Hot” video with over 300 million views, Michael Dapaah’s seven-word speech was “Thank God life still continues through comedy.”

Stormzy was honoured as Lovie Person of the Year for his ingenuity and activism, noting his #MerkyAirways campaign with Spotify to launch his #Merky imprint with Penguin Random House Books. Accepting his award via video, Stormzy used his speech to say, “#Merky to the world and back. Brrap.”

Megan Lucero, Director at The Bureau Local, accepted the Lovie Be Greater with Data award presented by Claire Phipps, digital editor at The Guardian, for pioneering local and national investigative journalism in the UK and Germany with open protocols for member journalists. Accepting her award, Megan Lucero remarked, “Local data. Local stories. Our communities matter.

Hans Jørgen Wiberg, Founder of Be My Eyes, was presented the Lovie Emerging Entrepreneur award by comedian and presenter Georgie Morrell, for building a community of 1.5 million volunteers to help 95,000 blind and low-sighted individuals “see” in real-time in hundreds of countries and languages. With his 7 Words of Lovie Hans Jørgen Wiberg exclaimed, Volunteering makes our world beautiful. Thank you.”

Alex Bertie earned the Lovie Creator for Change award, presented by YouTube creator Em Ford, for documenting his experience in transitioning from female to male, inspiring empathy and understanding with his honesty and transparency. Alex Bertie accepted with seven poignant words: “Lesbian. Gay. Bisexual. Transgender. Love to all.”

Accepting the Gold and the People’s Lovie for Websites – News & Politics, The Guardian’s Digital Editor Claire Phipps said, Journalism matters. We’ll keep going. Thank you. Rob Alderson, VP Content/Editor in Chief, WeTransfer, a Lovie Winner in Websites – Art, offered: “We came. We saw. We Transferred. Thanks.”

Additionally, Hamburg’s Jung von Matt earned the Lovie Award for Agency of the Year as the agency that performed the best across all categories.

In the final award of the night, The Lovie Lifetime Achievement award was presented by Sarah Burnett to Dr. Sue Black OBE in recognition of her pioneering contributions to the Internet and computing culture, including #TechMums and her campaign to Save Bletchley Park, and for helping reduce the gender disparity in the technology field. On stage, Dr. Sue Black used her seven words by speaking in code, “10 Print. Cheers Lovies. 20 goto 10.”

Nicolas Roope, chairman and cofounder of The Lovie Awards, said, “The Lovie Awards is the one night each year where the best creators from across Europe are in one room to celebrate the online inspiration and excellence that lead Europe and the world. This year’s winners represent some of the best work on the internet that we’ve seen in eight years and we’re proud to honour them.”
