Livia Firth, Sam Saffold (Supersamstuff), EVE Online’s Project Discovery, Dr. Quentin Stafford-Fraser and N=5 receive Europe’s Top Internet Honour

17 November 2017, London: The Lovie Awards, the most prestigious, and only truly pan-European honour for online excellence, last night celebrated the best of the European Internet for the seventh year in a row. The 7th Annual Lovie Awards was hosted by Irish comedian Aisling Bea at Picturehouse Central in London.

Winners included #SherlockLive (BBC Digital), VHS Retrominder (Viens-la), Control (Raw London), Air View (Glutamat), It’s Nice That Podcast, Searching for Syria (Google Brand Studio) and Week Against Child Abuse (Boomerang), in addition to Special Achievement winners like Lovie Emerging Entrepreneur Livia Firth, presented by Miriam Gonzalez Duartez, Lovie Lifetime Achievement Award honouree Dr. Quentin Stafford-Fraser, presented by past Lovie Lifetime Achievement recipient and inventor of the ARM microprocessor Sophie Wilson, Lovie Be Greater with Data Award winners Bernard Revaz and Attila Szantner from EVE Online’s Project Discovery and Lovie Agency of the Year N=5.

The Lovie Awards also partnered with the YouTube Creators for Change Programme for the second consecutive year, honouring creators whose work exemplifies the programme mission: to use the global power of online video to combat misunderstanding, fear and intolerance on the Internet, and to celebrate hope and positivity for audiences everywhere.

This year’s Lovie Creator for Change honouree was programme fellow Sam Saffold, for his channel SuperSamStuff, which addresses self-identity, xenophobia and more. His short film “A Welcoming Place” is a 26-minute thriller that asks viewers to confront their understanding of “otherness.” The award was presented by YouTube vlogger Luna Leigh.

Highlights from this year’s Lovie Awards include:

Inventor of the ARM processor and former Lovie Lifetime Achievement honouree Sophie Wilson presented the Lovie Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Quentin Stafford-Fraser for his work as one of the fathers of the webcam. Dr. Stafford-Fraser’s creation of the x-coffee client in 1991, which was created as a way to keep track of the availability of coffee in the office at the time was the groundbreaking invention that paved the way for the webcam and the ubiquity of live video streaming across the Internet.

Livia Firth was honoured with the Lovie Entrepreneur of the Year Award for her revolutionary work fighting the harms done by fast fashion as the founder and creative director of Eco-Age. Livia created the concept of the Green Carpet Challenge, which enlists and encourages actresses to wear and talk about sustainable fashion at Red Carpet events. The award was presented by international lawyer and founder of Inspiring Girls Miriam Gonzalez Durantez.

Attila Szantner and Bernard Revaz were presented with the Lovie Be Greater with Data Award for their work in developing EVE Online’s Project Discovery: a revolutionary online game that allows anyone on the Internet to search for and help identify exoplanets – or undiscovered worlds. The award was presented by Matt Taylor of the European Space Agency and Rosetta Mission, who won the Lovie Be Greater with Data Award in 2015.

N=5 accepted the Lovie Agency of the Year award. With 2 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze, 4 People’s Lovie Awards and 3 works Shortlisted, including Helping Heart, The Good Life Agency and—their biggest winner of the night with 9 Lovies—Evert_45, N=5 earned more Lovie Awards and shortlist nods than any other advertising agency this year.

Nicolas Roope, IADAS Jury Chairman for The Lovie Awards, said:  “This was a challenging year for the world, and European creators rose to that challenge with compelling work and ideas that move us forward as a society.”

The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS) selected the Gold, Silver and Bronze Lovie winners, and the online public voted for their favourites in The People’s Lovie Awards. The esteemed members of IADAS include Imogen Heap, actor and writer Stephen Fry, “Father of Wi-Fi” Vic Hayes, Marie-Louise Sadakane (Head of Consumer Marketing Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spotify), Efe Cakarel (Founder, MUBI.com), Mel Exon (CEO, The Sunshine Company), Yann LeCun (Director, Facebook AI Research), Corinne Vigreux (Co-Founder, TomTom) and Lauren Laverne (DJ & Presenter) amongst others.
