“Anything that helps move the needle on climate change, no matter how what it is, should remain a priority for the foreseeable future.”

Carbon literacy is essential for our planet’s health as we confront the severe impacts of global warming. It is the biggest threat we face, and reducing carbon is critical to decelerating climate change. While global initiatives like the COP summits have motivated companies to set ambitious carbon reduction targets, many still struggle with implementing, managing and transparently communicating these changes, risking greenwashing and inaction.

Technology remains a firm accelerant in lower-impact innovations and communicating real data for impactful carbon education. The athletic footwear company On just launched its groundbreaking LightSpray™ manufacturing technology in time for the Paris Olympics. It fabricates shoe uppers in just three minutes using a robotic arm and a continuous thread, simplifying production, slashing standard manufacturing times significantly and decreasing the carbon footprint of shoe uppers by approximately 75% compared to traditional methods. Unveiling and proving this innovation was made possible by technology at scale: credible impact results that help forecast the future.

Educating everyone is vital to tackling climate change, especially since retail is responsible for 25% of global carbon emissions. The more we all know as consumers, the quicker we can work together to cut those numbers down. Inventions like Klarna’s CO2e Tracker, ASKET’s Impact Receipt and LESTRANGE’s carbon budget calculator are revolutionizing how we understand our shopping habits. These tools empower hundreds of millions of consumers globally to clearly see and actively reduce their environmental footprint.

Alongside global climate legislation increasingly mandating carbon disclosures, technology will play a crucial role in advancing carbon literacy and impact management for both businesses and consumers. I believe this shift is vital for us to embrace — anything that helps move the needle on climate change, no matter how what it is, should remain a priority for the foreseeable future.
